Acne Quick Tips
Before you start using any acne product on your skin, you should know the basic rules on how to avoid making acne worse. Many people think that a little acne is tolerable and don’t follow the basic rules of keeping their face clean until it’s too late. We have listed some basic quick tips on avoiding those nasty pimples.
10 things you need to know about skin care products and acne skin cleansing.
- Before using any acne product, it is highly suggested to use a skin cleanser!
Tap water alone will only remove around 65 per cent of the dirt and oil on your skin. That’s why skin cleansers were created. They work as emulsifiers to remove dirt, excess natural skin oils (called sebum), bacteria, cosmetics and exfoliated surface skin cells. To get the most out of your cleanser, choose one that’s appropriate for your skin type eg: oily, dry or normal, for example.
- Over use of skin cleansers can harm your skin!
Acne skin cleansers remove accumulated oil, makeup, sweat and dirt from the surface of your skin. This makes it easier for your skin to absorb topical acne treatments. However, excessive use of acne cleansers can also lead to irritated and dry skin. Read the label and use acne cleansers only once or twice a day.
- Hand-washing to avoid acne.
Washing your hands correctly will help protect you against many bacteria and viruses. Start by washing your hands in warm water for at least 15 seconds. Using soap, rub your hands together vigorously, paying particular attention to the areas between your fingers and under your fingernails. Dry your hands with a clean, dry towel. If you’re in a public restroom, use paper towel to turn off the taps and open the door.
- Over use of soap can harm your skin.
Washing your face excessively with harsh soap will disrupt the natural balance of your skin by removing too much sebum and leaving the skin dry and unprotected. It will also leave behind a film of substance that can easily clog the pores and cause the facial acne you are trying so hard to avoid. Other chemicals, such as creams and ointments not made specifically for acne sufferers, will usually dry out your skin and cause redness and swelling in time so avoid them.
- Using the right water temperature to wash your face.
Not too hot, not too cold. Use tepid water when washing your face. Water that’s too hot can burn your skin or cause broken capillaries. Water that’s too cold can cause the blood vessels to open excessively in an attempt to warm up your skin which will attract more bacteria. Lukewarm water is the best choice.
- Retinoic acid causes baby deformities
Retinoic Acid (Vitamin A) is used in some Acne Products for more severe cases of whiteheads which stops oil production and dries the skin. But, can in some cases cause baby deformities when taken while pregnant. It is highly suggested to check ingredients of the acne product’s you are using when you are pregnant and avoid any products that contain Retinoic acid [even in minuscule amounts]. Another product for severe cases of cystic acne is Accutane which works well to get rid of and prevent the recurrence of acne but, if a women should conceive while on Accutane, the risk of birth defects are extremely high. Doctors list Accutane as one of the most dangerous class of drugs for a developing baby.
- Switch Acne Products conservatively
When beginning Acne Products for the first time, begin slowly with only the cleanser initially. In a few days add another product and so on to gradually allow the skin to respond. When changing products, switch to one item at a time in a similar manner.
- Sebum production and skin cleansing
The skin produces its greatest volume of sebum and oil at approximately 1 to 2 o’clock in the afternoon and its least volume in the middle of the night. Therefore a thorough skin care regimen performed in the late afternoon or early evening is pivotal to effective acne control. Cleanse thoroughly.
- Diet and eating healthy
A good diet is an effective tool in controlling acne, especially fruits and vegetable rich in antioxidants, combined with adequate protein. A healthy and well-balanced diet affects the health and efficiency of your body and that includes your skin. Every organ in your body relies upon the same vitamins, minerals and nutrients to function. Since the skin is at the end of the food line, it suffers greatly from an improperly balanced diet.
- Coffee Consumption
Research suggests that coffee (with or without caffeine) stimulates the production of cortisol (see the above section on stress) and acts just like stress. Coffee may be a promoter of acne and its consumption should be limited.
