* Common questions asked to Dermatologists about fighting acne.
Question: What is Acne and What Causes Acne?
Dermatologist:
Acne, an inflammation of the skin, is characterized by black-heads,
whiteheads, redness and nodules, commonly known as "pimples".
An overproduction of sebum causes acne. Acne is often linked to changes
that occur during adolencence. Interestingly, one out of two women
has oily or blemished skin!
Question: What kind of cosmetics and cleansers can an acne patient use?
Dermatologist:
Look for "non-comedogenic" cosmetics and toiletries. These
products have been formulated so that they will not cause or aggravate
acne. Avoid occlusive foundations that can exacerbate blemishes by
clogging pores. Make sure you always use mild products made with a
physiological pH formula in order to eliminate impurities without
mistreating your skin. Proper hydration is also crucial and not to
be neglected. Oily skin does not produce excess water, but excess
sebum. Consequently, oily skin can suffer from dehydration and it
is therefore necessary to ensure proper and regular moisturizing.
La Roche-Posay Effaclar products are frequently recommended by dermatologists
because they correct every oily skin imperfection daily. The selection
of cosmetics and cleansers should be made with your dermatologist
or pharmacist.
Question: Does the Sun help improve acne more quickly?
Dermatologist:
UV Rays are harmful in a strong dose. The summer sun may improve oily
skin for a while, however this temporary improvement in acne that
most perceive is most probably due to the change in skin colour. Meanwhile,
this effect in misleading because the sun increases the production
of sebum and thickens the stratum corneum of the epidermis and could
therefore promote new blemishes in the fall. The use of sun protection
containing as little oil as possible is highly recommended.
Acne Prone Skin - Discover your healthy skin today.
Imperfections have 2 common causes:
1. Irregular sebum production at the pore level. Sebum, a vital substance
responsible for the skin's suppleness and elasticity is secreted unevenly
over the face.
2. In-depth cellular disorganisation. In order to renew itself, the
skin evacuates it's dead cells and replaces them with new ones. However,
in this case the renewal process is completely disorganized; dead
cells are difficult to detach and gradually block the pore openings.
As a result, the skin's surface becomes covered with multiple imperfections:
the pores dilate, the skin's surface becomes uneven, micro-inflammations
begin to develop. These cutaneous imperfections appear on the face
regularly, mainly due to effects of stress or fatigue, or before menstruation.
Acne Prone Skin - Discover your Routine.
To maintain your healthy skin, it is vital to have an effective skin care routine consisting of a toner, a cleanser, and a hydrating cream specially developed for acne-prone skin. Treat your skin differently day and night! Sebum glands become hyperactive at night, producing excess sebum. It is therefore at night that action must be taken in order to reduce hyper-activity and use the lack of sebum secretion on the skin's surface to better penetrate the core of the pores.
Beauty Advisor Tips:
• Sleep and avoid stress.
• Drink alot of water.
• Use a cleanser specifically designed to eliminate excess sebum.
Alternate with a light exfoliant every 2-3 days.
• Avoid violent rubbing of the face as it stimulates the sebaceous
glands to produce excess sebum.
• An oily skin can also become dehydrated. Be sure to use an adapted
hydrating care and cleanser. Use a light hydrating care that tightens
and smoothes the skin.
